Tata Comm to provide web business tools powered by Google Apps

Google Inc’s Indian unit and Tata Communications will partner to provide web-based business connectivity services to companies in India, where a fast-expanding economy throws up new opportunities.

The companies would work together to provide business tools such as email, instant messaging, calendar functionality, video and office presentations over the Internet using the Google Apps software suit, Tata Communications said in a statement.

While Microsoft and International Business Machines Corp dominate the market for enterprise email, Google is trying to convince businesses to switch to its so-called cloud-based services, in which software is accessed over the Internet.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in April the company had a couple of million enterprise customers for the Google Apps software suite and was adding about 3,000 businesses per day.

The web-based services would help companies cut costs without needing to buy additional software or hardware, Tata Communications said.

I think the really interesting question is, in the wider sense, whether they are becoming too powerful as an organisation for the greater good.

The amount of information they have on people's web browsing habits is known. Add to that Gmail, Google Docs, Chrome OS, Android and Google TV and you start to realise they will have access to a heck of alot more information about a heck of a lot of people.

The potential for that information to be misused is very real and worrying.

Yeah, so? There are three ways a company can monopolize something:

First is the "cable company" model: pay off the Powers that Be (be it by outright bribes or "community development contributions" or whatever), and get an official monopoly enforced by the government.

Second is the Microsoft model: pull whatever kind of dirty tricks you can to undermine the competition, and consider any fines or lawsuits simply a cost of doing business.

Third is actually GOOD, and what I think Google is doing, and every company should try to do: give the best deal. I use tons of Google services, usually because they're the best, and haven't paid them a penny. Heck, if I bothered to "monetize" my blogs, I could even MAKE money from them!

Now, that's not to say Google can do no wrong. Sure they can, and they have outages and errors like anyone else. But they at least seem to be gaining their dominance fair and square, and not abusing it.

Companies like Goggle and MS

Companies like Goggle and MS get to be monopolies because they are a) clever and b) provide the product people want. But times come and go. MS trashed IBM, Google could be replacing MS and something will come later and as yet we know not what or when.

I wouldn't let it worry you. Markets are powerful things and when a giant is no longer right or relevant they get changed out.

Isn't Google inching towards monopolising the world wide web?

It has tied with Tata (again the biggest Indian company) to provide web business tools powered by Google Apps to Indian Companies, which can hit may existing Enterprise Solution & Service Providers. Like Microsoft, earlier it has launched many products and services to cruise and monopolise markets, blows to it in Europe, China & elsewhere seems not unfair. What you think?
